PRESIDENT'S REPORT

ANNUAL MEETING EAST END LIGHTHOUSES 2006

ACCOMPLISHMENTS - 2006

  1. Increased recognition of East End Lighthouses as an authority and information reference of the area's lighthouses and their history.

  2. Further promoted the awareness of the offshore lighthouses of Southold Town with six cruises including the always popular (11th year) and sold-out cruise on a Cross Sound ferry. Some complaints were received on the latter, primarily related to the food and the weather. Ways to improve are being considered, especially as this cruise is our best fundraiser.

  3. Public visits and landing at Long Beach Bar, Plum Island and Little Gull, the latter the first tour by the public in its 200-year history.

  4. Organized and sponsored, with the help of Greenport's school teachers, the fifth annual 4th grade lighthouse contest. Winners are displayed in the Greenport Post Office.

  5. Southold Town Lighthouses presentation was made to the Oysterpond school and to the Mattituck Cutchogue Historical Society.

  6. Planned trips to Montauk and Boston Lights were cancelled because of lack on interest. The trip to Valcour Island Light despite a high degree of interest had to be cancelled when the transport boat lost its funds to operate.

  7. With the help of Regina Kahney, maintained our ever-increasing popular web site. See attached Summary Report.
  8. Accomplished repairs and maintenance at Bug Light that included replacement of both exterior doors, dock repairs and roof recoating.

  9. Initiated a petition drive for the Coast Guard to continue to maintain the offshore lighthouses of Southold Town as Aids to Navigation. See attached Southold Town Resolution

  10. Researched and had published a comprehensive booklet on the history of the Little Gull Light Station.
